At Home Together

At Home Together was a collaboration born from the need to reach out and engage people during COVID-19, working together and spreading the ghost net message about ocean conservation. Using the social media model developed by Lynnette Griffiths during other exhibitions The idea behind the AT HOME TOGETHER was for people to purchase a ghost net package that included instructions, make an animal and then send something back to us. When stages one and two were complete Erub Artists with Lynnette created a piece of art that shares something about everyone’s time at home during the COVID-19 period. COVID created a time to slow down, To take some time and many people thought about their futures as well as the planet’s. Taking stock of what we thought as the virus took hold, our concerns and thoughts for others as the news from other countries flooded in, we all wanted a better place to enjoy together again. The instructions included advice as below: The eventual piece will reflect what everyone thinks about this time now and what is important to you. You are using a harmful and destructive material that has been collected from the oceans and beaches. It has been cleaned & prepared for use so together we can return a work of art that is beautiful and meaningful. We hope that you send us something back. Please share your story with us as well. The response to our face book posts was amazing in over 2 hrs we had collected over 400 names and the first 200 kits were posted out. People were obviously looking for something to do but making the kits was a huge job. Diann, Carmen and the Erub team set to work as the response by recipients grew – soon animals were being posted back. When enough work had been collected and Lynnette could travel back to Erub we set about working out how we could join everyone together. It was decided to use the everyday practice of coming together for a meal, so we created a bowl. The ocean is a huge food bowl that we all share in together, we must keep this food bowl healthy. Whatever happens on land, let us hope that we can preserve our oceans and the life within. A special project during a very difficult time, an artwork that brough people together while apart.
