CYCLE OF LIFE
The coconut tree has a big impact towards the people of the Torres Strait. The coconut fruit provides food for eating and cooking, the leaves of the coconut tree provide thatching for shelter and shade for the islander on a sunny day or when it’s time for bed. Also, the leaves are used for weaving baskets and making toys for the village children to play with. This also helps with the cycle of life, because the knowledge is passed down from generation to generation. When the fruit falls from the tree it rolls into the sea and starts drifting with the tide and the current out to the open sea, then eventually the fruit gets washed up onto a sand cay and few years down the track the sand cay will turn into a deserted island.
