“Parlu is my old man’s name. My daddy. He belongs to that country now.” – Yunkurra Billy Atkins
Parlu is Blue Hills, Yunkurra’s father’s country. Associated with the waterhole here are the various jila (snakes) that live in this country.
Yunkurra was born at Weld Springs, also known as Well 9 on the Canning Stock Route. He grew up around Wiluna, but returned north to his traditional country, including Kumpupirntily (Lake Disappointment), Savory Creek and Jilakurru; closer to Well 24 on the Canning Stock Route. Yunkurra is a very knowledgeable senior Martu man, and is considered an authority on these significant Martu sites. He narrowly avoided being taken away by missionaries as a child and subsequently grew up with elderly people, learning traditionally about his culture and Country. Yunkurra now lives at Jigalong, close to his home country. Yunkurra has been painting longer than most Martu artists, carving and painting independently since the early 2000s. As an individual he was instrumental in the establishment of Martumili Artists. Yunkurra’s work was selected for the 2003 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award. He has held regular solo exhibitions, and his work has been acquired by The National Gallery of Australia. Yunkurra’s recent collaborative animation, Cannibal Story, has also screened in a number of highly celebrated film festivals and screen events around the globe.
