Wikiri

This work depicts Wikiri [Midway Well], located east of Parnngurr along the Canning Stock Route. Caroline spent much time travelling around this region with her family in the pujiman (bush dwelling) era. A large soak and claypan dominate Wikiri, with the soak providing a source of fresh water all year around. When the soak has not been visited for a time, shrubs and grass must be dug out of the way to access the water. Nearby rockholes include Larta [Surprise Well] and Kuyurru.

Wikiri is a site featued in the jukurrpa (dreamtime) story of Wirnpa, the rainmaking snake that created the land around the Percival Lakes region;

“Wirnpa and another man were travelling from the west. When Wirnpa stopped at Wikiri, he spread out an assortment of seeds, where they remain as rocks in the landscape today. At Yinyaru, they saw flashing lights and the man found an enormous hailstone pulsating with light. He flew with Wirnpa, holding the hailstone against his belly. He dropped it when it became too heavy, but then they picked it up and kept going.”
