Mulyamiji
“This painting is of the Mulyamiji and the big clayplan out there – those red, white and yellow dots are the flowers that grow next to the claypan.” – Carol Williams As a part of the Mulyamiji March 2025 KJ (Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa) rangers held a three day camp in the area of Wantili. Managing and surveying the culturally significant Mulyamiji (great desert skink). Carol grew up in Jigalong and Wiluna before moving to Parnngurr Community when she was 13 or 14 she is both a KJ ranger and Martumili artist, these works were inspired and painted on her father’s country Wantili, sitting underneath a shady gum overlooking the large clayplan there after a day of surveying the Mulyamji Ngurra (home). The KJ program manages the conservation of the natural and cultural assets on Martu country through the employment of Martu as Indigenous rangers. KJ rangers work to build knowledge on and protect the many important species that occur on their country, including the Mankarr, the wiminyji and the mulyamiji (great desert skink).
