Yulpu

Yulpu is a large soak located within the McKay Ranges, and just south of Parnngurr Aboriginal community. Yulpu is still a popular camping ground and hunting area for Martu today.

During the pujiman (traditional, desert dwelling) period, Martu would traverse very large distances annually in small family groups, moving seasonally from water source to water source, and hunting and gathering bush tucker as they went. At this time knowledge of water sources was critical for survival, and today Martu Country is still defined in terms of the location and type of water. Each of the hundreds of claypans, rockholes, waterholes, soaks and springs found in the Martu desert homelands is known by name, location, quality and seasonal availability through real life experience and the recounting of Jukurrpa (Dreaming) narratives.

"I was born in Port Hedland and went to school in Newman, then moved here [Punmu]. I'm working here with children, with KJ [Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa]."

– Marita Lubin

Born in 1980, Marita Lubin now lives and works in Punmu, where she is a member of the KJ cultural and ranger group and actively involved in local youth education. Marita began painting with Martumili Artists in 2016. Through both her artistic and educational work, she is committed to preserving and passing on traditional knowledge to the next generation.

Marita’s paintings frequently depict different types of bush tucker and important sites around Punmu, including Rawa, Wirlarra (Wilarra), Jila-Jila, Nyayartakujarra (Ngayarta Kujarra, Lake Dora), Jartuti, and Paji. Her work is clearly motivated by the desire to record and share Martu cultural practices, especially those related to gathering bush foods and living on Country.
