Biography:
Stephanie Ali is the eldest daughter of senior weaver Doreen Jinggarrabarra and the granddaughter of Elizabeth Mipilanggurr. She is a Burarra speaker, and is connected to the coastal region of the Blythe River; her father’s country is Yilan and her mother’s country in Jina-wunya. From a young age she has learnt to gather, prepare and weave pandanus under the guidance of her mother and her aunties Freda Wayartja Ali and Bonnie Burarn.garra.
Whilst Stephanie is a competent weaver, she has been focused on raising her young family and her career working for West Arnhem Regional Council and Mala’la Health Service Aboriginal Corporation. Most recently she has been facilitating guided tours of Maningrida Arts & Culture and the Djomi Museum.
Stephanie has assisted with the weaving for many of her mother’s significant woven artworks, including the section of the NGV’s Mun-dirra commission. She is now working towards her own weaving practice.
