Jindiwirrinyi

I wanted to capture the personalities of the Willie Wagtail. As a self pointed neighbourhood watch, you will see them perch high up in trees and other vantage point to keeps an eye on everyone. They love to broadcast out to the neighbourhood everyone’s business.

When they fly down to catch insects they flick from place to place and hard to keep your eyes on it.  I love these birds.

Their name in Bunuba and Walmajarri is based on the sound they make and in their English name includes their movement.

Biography:

I’m Natalie Davey from Fitzroy Crossing. I have Bunuba, Walmjarri, Scottish and English heritage and identify as a custodian from Bunuba Danggu Muwayi in Fitzroy Crossing.

I was born in Derby and my first language is Kriol but I am most practiced at Australian Standard English.

I was born in Derby and I spent my first five years out at Noonkanbah where my ngawiji (grandmother of fathers side) helped raise me while mum taught in the school. My life I have lived between Broome and Derby with a couple of years in Perth for school and Whistler Canada for something different.

Since I was young I have loved creating through building, art, writing and storytelling. Art is a vital life practice for me as it helps me remember better, work through ideas and/or issues and creates understanding and beauty in my world. On returning to my home town in 2010 my art has involved to include helping me reconnect with my languages, country and connections. I love sharing the world around me.

In 2024, Natalie won the Telstra Multimedia Award as part of the NATSIAAs in her first year as a finalist.
