Handpainted Perspex Earrings

This range of beautiful handpainted perspex earrings were created by emerging artists from Iltja Ntjarra art centre.

Iltja Ntjarra is a 100% Aboriginal owned and directed art centre supporting landscape painters in Mparntwe (Alice Springs). Iltja Ntjarra has a special focus on supporting the ‘Hermannsburg School’ style watercolour artists, who continue to paint in the tradition of their grandfather and relative, Albert Namatjira, arguably one of Australia’s most famous artists of the 20th century. Albert Namatjira taught his children to follow in his unique style, who have since passed this knowledge on to their children, which has resonated in a legacy of watercolour artists in the Central Desert region. By continuing his legacy, these artists sustain an important piece of living history.

These earrings are collaboration between the Iltja Ntjarra artists, Magpie Goose and Elbow Workshop. Magpie Goose is a fashion social enterprise showcasing bright, bold, fabulous textiles designed by Aboriginal artists and hand screenprinted in Australia. Elbow Workshop is a design workshop located in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) that creates products with story. The jewellery design was developed by Magpie Goose and Elbow Workhshop. The Iltja Ntjarra artists hand paint each pair using structure acrylic paint, exploring colour and paint on the Perspex surface.

The primary artists who participate in regular earring painting workshops are sisters Clara Inkamala, Noreen Hudson and Kathleen France and their families. These third generation artists (Albert Namatjira was their great-uncle) work side by side in the Iltja Ntjarra studio, developing their painting skills and sharing memories of family.
