Peter’s saltwater story

Peter has painted a saltwater Yirritja story from one of his homelands on Galiwinku (Elcho Island).

This is a very important story for Peter to share with you and his family. Off the coast of the island in the copper blue water are some freshwater springs which come up to the surface and you can find fresh drinking water in the middle of the Ocean.

This painting depicts two Sea Turtles who rise to the surface of the ocean to breathe,  their shells break the surface of the water. The diamond designs represent the Honey Bees. The Honey Bees descending from the sky to meet on the surface of the water. This ceremonial depiction shows their meeting place.

Also depicted in ceremonial design is the guḻibitjpitj (plover) shown through abstracted footprints across the artwork.
