Lhungurlpara – Fish with Many Bones

This is fish that got many bones. We used to line up with our nets and catch the fish, but the fish had many bones so children wasn’t allowed to touch it, only adults allowed to eat ‘em. This one was like a dangerous fish cos it had many bones, it was really strict. Adults never used to give us cos it would scare our parents that we would choke. Few times I ate and you can feel them little bones in your throat.

Biography:

Josie Fly is an Indigenous woman with a Czech and Arrarnta background. Josie's mum is Western Arrarnta and was born in Ntaria (Hermannsburg) in 1932. Josie's father is from Checkoslovakia.

Josie was born in Alice Springs and grew up at Red Sandhill with her Mum's younger sister Rahel Ungwanaka, who was one of the original Hermannsburg Potters. She was also bought up by Rahel's husband, senior Law man Nahasson alongside their six children.

Josie is proud of her joyful upbringing in Red Sandhill and fondly remembers being spoilt and spending lots of time with family at special places like Running Waters and Boggy Hole.

Josie began at the Hermannsburg Potters in 2023, following her Aunty Rahel's advice to become a potter.
