Lizzie – Karrinyarra Tjukurrpa

This painting depicts designs connected to the sacred site of Karrinyarra. This is a Kapi Tjukurrpa (Water Dreaming) and Yalka Tjukurrpa (Bush Onion) place. The lines can represent water travelling over country and the dots represent the Yalka plant that is in abundance in the area.

Name: Lizzie Nangala

Language: Luritja

Community: Papunya

Biography:

Lizzie was born in Papunya, her mother passed away when she was very young and so she was brought up by relatives. Lizzie still live in Papunya with her husband Adrian Stockman. Her children are all grown up.

Lizzie first painted for Papunya Tjupi in 2008, and then waited another 13 years before coming to the art centre again. She paints the sacred site of Karrinyarra, about 2 hours north of Papunya. Karrinyarra is a Kapi Tjukurrpa (water Dreaming) site, abundant with yalka (bush onions) at the right time of year. Lizzie's refined dotting represent the bush onion growing in the area, while the vertical lines represent the water travelling over the Country.
