TRACEY Ramsay DOORLOO – Gorge Yard

In this painting, Tracey Ramsey depicts Gorge Yard – a beloved camping and fishing spot for the families at Bow River community. The water at Gorge Yard is abundant with black brim, turtles and crocodiles, making it a good fishing spot. Here, people like to jump and swim in the river to cool off. In the lower right-hand side of the painting is the holding paddock for the horses, where mustering takes place.

This is Bow River Country. This area is called Jacks Yard. My Grandfather Timmy Timms (Senior) was droving around here and he discovered this cave with paintings from our old old people. This was their shelter from rain and cold weather. Granddad also found remains of of ash from fire. This place is also a great fishing spot – we used to catch black brim, turtle’s and crocodile’s here.

Kilkayi Barramundi Dreaming

Three women trying to trap Dayiwul the great barramundi with spinifex nets. This is a traditional method of fishing where by nyiyirriny (river spinifex) is rolled and placed in the water forming a kind of net. Dayiwul was too clever for the women and jumped over the barrier they had laid.  She pushed her body through the rock of what is now called Pitt Range. The women gave up and walked to a place called Gawinyji (Cattle Creek) where they turned into rocks.
The scales of Dayiwul embedded in the rock, became the diamonds that are extracted from the Argyle Diamond Mine.
