Gija Skin Group

This painting is about skin groups and the difficulties people are facing today in association with this matter,’ Yvonne Martin writes. ‘In the Dreamtime skin groups between men and women had a very strict law.’ These are (part 1): 1. Marry right skin. 2. Talk to right skin. 3. Body contact with right skin. Now (part 2): 4. Very few marry right skin. 5. Very few talk to right skin. 6. Very few have body contact with right skin. Easy and sweet (part 3): 7. Now those that have marry right skin are still together. 8. Now very few are talking to right skin. 9. Now very few are making body contact with right skin.”

Kilkayi Barramundi Dreaming

Three women trying to trap Dayiwul the great barramundi with spinifex nets. This is a traditional method of fishing where by nyiyirriny (river spinifex) is rolled and placed in the water forming a kind of net. Dayiwul was too clever for the women and jumped over the barrier they had laid.  She pushed her body through the rock of what is now called Pitt Range. The women gave up and walked to a place called Gawinyji (Cattle Creek) where they turned into rocks.
The scales of Dayiwul embedded in the rock, became the diamonds that are extracted from the Argyle Diamond Mine.

Warlawoon – Kathy Ramsay

“This painting is about the Warlawoon Country my dad Rammey Ramsay country my beautiful old artist dad who left his memory with me to carry on after him.

Trees, camping areas, water holes, hills, and traditional stories of his mum and dad and their parents and so on he told me.” Kathy Ramsay

Kathy is one many children of the late senior Gija man of Jungoora skin, Rammay Ramsay, whose ancestral Country lies to the west of Bedford Downs near Elgee Cliffs. Following in her father’s foorsteps, her work is forever infused with the memory of Warlawoon Country. Together with a longing for Country, their work teases out the complexities of Gija world-views and the impact of pastoral occupation on their land.

Frog Hollow

Beryline has painted one of many favourite swimming waterholes that is located in Frog Hollow – seen within the middle of the painting are the colours blue and green, these colours represent the “living water” whereas the yellow is a depiction of the sand that surrounds the pool. ” It’s only just straight down from where the camp is, this where all the kids go after school or when its hot to have a swim” Beryline says this is a favourite swimming place for everyone.
