Wayuk –

‘I always follow the footpath of my grandmother. I have too many stories of my grandmother. We went to the bush and ate bushtucker like yam, yabbie, barra, catfish and magpie goose. We didn’t come into town often, we were staying at Barrihdjowkkeng outstation. I learned how the old people used to live. I always think about my family out there and I keep going. My grandmother asked me to work with her for many years. I watched her making lino and screen printing. That’s why I stay in this job and I’m for the women’s centre’.  Roseanna Bonson 2021

Roseanna’s first design is a 2 colour waterlily design. Wayuk (waterlily) *kuninjki grow in the swamps around Barrihdjowkkeng.

Nganka, flowers

My painting represents the wild Nganka, flowers that live and grow around my bubu (country). I love going out bush and am enjoy looking at the wetlands which gives me inspiration for my artwork.

I am a Nyungul woman. My art depicts cultural, historic and contemporary stories from my Country, the Helensvale and Shipton’s Flat area in Far North Queensland.

TEXAS DOWNS COUNTRY

‘Charlene is painting the country that her relatives and family come from- Texas Downs Station. Texas Downs Station is a place full of caves, waterholes and red hills. Charlene thinks this country is beautiful, there is plenty of water and many rockpools, creeks and rockholes. This is the land as she remembers it. Charlene often goes out bush with her children and her grandmother Betty Carrington and Betty’s husband, Patrick Mung Mung.’

RED BUTTE

‘This Red Butte, this red one,’ Churchill Cann says. The brown shape below Red Butte is Wangkarnaban, Crow Spring. To the left of Crow Spring is Cockatoo Spring. The black shape at the top is the water of Cockatoo Spring. Cann tells an Ngarrangkarni (Dreaming) story from this country. ‘That’s where that girl bin jump right up la that side now, to Auvergne, She bin make a man there Dugurrun Nyinyi. He bin lock ‘im up la hole, he bin run away, find him two brother bla him and that two brother bin tell ‘im “climb up that long one bardigi tree come up here, come up here,’ That girl bin listening, they killed her with a spear.’ A woman made a small man out of her teeth. The little man came to life and shut the woman in a cave and ran off. He came across his two brothers who told him to climb a tree to escape the woman who was coming after him with a pointed stick. Before she could get close enough to spear the man, the two boys killed her.

‘This is out on Fitzroy. That’s where I grew up. Caravans, vegie garden, dingo scalps and boab tree. I used to go and get the middle part of the cabbage and eat it while it is still in the ground and the carrots I used to pull it out from the ground take a couple of bites and put it back in the ground. My dad came along and saw the middle part of the cabbage missing and then went to pull some carrots up and saw that the carrots had been eaten up. He thought we had an animal under the ground eating our carrots. One day he was rescuring a beautiful parrot from the big boab tree and I did not know he was up that tree and done my normal routine with the veggies and got caught out big time along with a flogging.

painting about Jowurubanj a Dreaming place for babies.An old man’s wife had given birth to a baby,and she left it (baby) near a paper-bark tree by the waterhole,so she can go look for sugar-bag (bush honey).her husband told her not to leave the baby near that waterhole,but she told him she was going to be quick.but while she was away the water-snake from that waterhole came out and took the baby.this place is near Bedford Downs Station,on the west side..Legend goes that if a woman wants a baby,she can go and swim in this waterhole.
