Holiday Camp – Lorraine Daylight

Lorraine Daylight has painted her father’s country. Daylight’s father is senior Warmun artist Gordon Barney. ‘Holiday camp,’ Gordon Barney says. ‘Walkabout every holiday catching kangaroo, porcupine, goanna – all sorts.’ Barney worked as a stockman on Alice Downs station as a young man. In the periods where they were given a break from station work, Barney and his family would camp at this place and live on bush food. This country was excellent hunting ground.

Mantarays

Mantarays like to swim together with each other with allxkinds of rays due to the seasonal change which isn’t normal because of constant climate change.

Black Jelly Fish I

This print titled “Black Jelly Fish” usually looks like plastic bags that float together in the water when there actually swimming together, with there long legs or tentacles are actually invisible when you see them under water which is why we have to always be aware when we see these signs swimming especially in KUKI season (northerly strong winds).

Warlawoon – Kathy Ramsay

This painting is about the Warlawoon Country  – my dad Rammie Ramsay country, my beautiful old artist dad who left his memory with me to carry on after him.

In most of Kathy’s depiction of her father’s country would usually include circular shapes as well as squares – circular shapes representing the water holes whereas the square shapes depicts the camping grounds. But within this particular artwork there is a tree like figure that is centred within the middle. Depicting one of the many plants that are located all around Warlawoon country.

“the traditional stories of his mum and dad and their parents and so on he told me”

Bush String Bag

Bush String Bags are vastly more labour intensive than Pandanus fibre art. Depending on the size, literally hundreds of hours can go into making a bush string bag.

Artists collect Anputput (Kurrajong, sounds like “but-but”), and then steam the logs in a fire. Bark is peeled off and the outer darker skin discarded. The softer inner fibre is mashed and separated into usable strips which has a lace-like visual look.

From here the strips are rolled – usually on a leg or thigh – and spun into the string form. This alone is very time consuming as the artist needs to create the material from which she weaves.

At this point natural bush colour is boiled and the string added to give it colouring. Only now with a dyed and functionally formed piece of string can the artist begin to create loops, weaving row upon row to create a dilly bag.

Frangipani v4/4

Frangipani is my dads favourite blossom tree the aroma of the pumenia gives off a strong scent. He likes to collect different colours of the flowers from across the Torres Strait region.

Brown & Blue thongs

This print titled “blue & brown thongs” kinda looks weird side by side when I found lost along the sea shore near the beach here at Kubin and it kinda looked like a dirty blue and brown colour which is what I used as part of my colours in this print.
