Desert Choir Tote by Judith Inkamala

I was choir lady before, with Lily and David, we went everywhere for singing. Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney. We travelled a lot with choir. Then I retired, too much coughing. The last time i sang with the choir was at Ross River, when Morris was conductor. Then I left that choir. I sometimes help the choir for candle light time and funeral. The Desert choir went everywhere, Germany, America, they have travelled all around Australia. Alice Springs Desert Mob Show they sing too. Singing when they are sitting down on their knees, clapping and listening to conductor. Here on my pot is Areyonga choir, singing in the cave in Pitjantjatjara language. Aranda, Pitjantjatjara and English singing. Ntaria and Areyonga sing together – three languages, all singing together.

– Judith Pungkarta Inkamala

This unique tote’s design was drawn from the ceramic art work of Judith Pungkarta Inkamala, ‘Desert Choir’.

Pujiman Days

“In the pujiman (traditional, desert dwelling)) days, people were walking Country, over sand dunes, going up and down a long way. The country has a lot of different foods, people collected them along the way. People came together, they met at a big waterhole. Palya! (Good!)”

Jarlaloo Country

Jarlaloo is Patrick’s country. It lies south of Warmun and north of Purnululu (Bungle Bungles). Patrick knows this country inside out, as he walked and mustered cattle all throughout this country with his father, George Mung Mung. Jarlaloo is the Gija name for the Ord River, where it runs into Stony Creek. There are a lot of doworrolji in this country – doworrolji are rocks heaped up into ridges.

Juwari- The Devil Spirit – by Peter Thomas

The Juwari is the Devil Spirit.

He is the power, force and spirit of creation iitself, and everything within it and within us  He is the creation of country and the land, of the weather & seasons, of all the elements. He is the source of all forms of life and of death.

The Gija people present Rover Thomas’s dreamtime story, through performing the Joonba- A traditional dance and song ceremony called Gurrir Gurrir. Rover was given this dreamtime by the Juwari

This Gija story as told by senior Gija elder Patrick Mung and Cultural leader Jane Yalunga (Rover Thomas’s only daughter).

The story shares ‘there were three Juwari, from Wyndham side, from Gija country and down that way. Each one had a Joonba, it different each way. Them Juwari been fighting  who is the strongest  and who will bring them joonba to the Old man.

The Gija Juwari won and that was the start of the beginning, the birth of the corroboree and the Joonba- Gurrir Gurrir, as it is today’
