Kulyakartu

This painting is about all the rocks and kurru (creeks) all around Kulyakartu and Kirriwirri.

We went camping there for to two weeks, we went to Wirnpa first and then to Kirriwirri. We camped in the nice flat ground in the open when we got to Kulyakartu.

This is the artists Grand Fathers country.

The Gread Sandy Desert

“My grandfather Jukulya (Joseph Woia) and my grandmother Tutuku (Trixie Long) took my dad and my dad’s four brothers and my 6 aunties. They travelled to places in Putuwartu, Jinajarra, Januawanti, Pitarn and the last stop was Wili. Then it was time to travel again! With my grandparents it was a challenging journey for them all and rest of my dad, brothers and sisters went long with my grandmother. Clay pans and Spinifex

This paining is about the claypans and spinifex in the dry season time, when spinifex, the native plants and the country gets dry. When the rain comes it makes the country green again. Some animals love dry season for hunting. Some times we go hunting for animals for our families

With the Paru (spinifex) we pull out the whole plant, roots and all and then we twist it around to make a flat basket (Jitatu) like a donut ring. Then this sits on the head and you can carry water for example. The water is in a Kapara like a shallow bowl which you make from the hard wood of a tree like Parntal (Owenia Reticulata)
