Kunkurra (Spiral Wind) – Margot

Margot has depicted kunkurra, the spiralling wind associated with several sites in the Kardbam clan. On one level, this design can be interpreted as a depiction of the kinds of mini-cyclones common during the wet season in Arnhem Land. Kunkurra also relates specifically to a site called Bilwoyinj, near Mankorlod, on the artist’s clan estate.

At this site, two of the most important Kuninjku creation beings, a father and son known as na-korrkko, are believed to have hunted and eaten a goanna. They left some of the goanna fat behind at the site, which turned into the rock that still stands there today.

Bilwoyinj site is also a ceremonial ground for a ceremony called Yabbaduruwa, a major ceremony owned by the Yirridja patrimoiety. The Yabbaduruwa ceremony is primarily concerned with initiation, land ownership and promoting the cyclical regeneration of the human and natural worlds.

Sevania Kemarre Bonney – Great Grandmothers Country

My great Grandmothers Country is where we go hunting. We hunt goanna and bush turkey. We swim in the river. We look for bush banana, bush potato and wild oranges. I am inspired by the beautiful wild flowers that grow there. Being on my Great grandmothers country makes me happy and content.

Dakota Ngwarraye Petrick – Mwanyen (Bush Tomatoe)

My twin sister Latoya and myself have just started painting bush flowers.  Our grandmother Elizabeth Ngwarraye Bonney shows us the good way.

This is the first time I have ever printed using a lino carving.  I did the Mwanyen (bush tomatoe) plant because it is sweet tasting fruit that we find in creek beds after the rain.

We go bush hunting and find bush banana growing everywhere!

We pick them and I cook them and eat them with my family.  They are nice and sweet!

Bush Utensil Holder

Fibre Art is an ancient Aboriginal women’s craft that is still made today using the same techniques as their ancestors. Making fibre art is labour intensive and much care and fine needlework is required to ensure the finished object is both functional and beautiful. Fibre art from Ghunmarn Culture Centre includes dilly bags, floor mats, bush fans, woven creatures found in the landscape, plants such as yams (bush potato), baskets, place mats, and spirit figures such as mermaids and Mukuys. Natural pandanus fibre (Mukarra), is used to make much of the fibre art produced by the artists of Djilpin Arts. Women collect the pandanus by pulling from the top of the pandanus tree, then stripping and drying the leaves before they are dyed with natural bush colour collected from the Beswick surrounds.
