Edie Kemarre Holmes – Arratherrk (bush flower)

They would use the vine of this plant as rope to help carry coolamon with kids.  Make like a bag and carry the kids in this.  My grandmother was called Arratherrk and her sister was calle Pwelk, the leaf of the bush banana.  At Elkedra there is two vine trees and each sister is named after each one.

Colleen Ngwarraye Morton – Altywart

When I was a little girl I would go and collect the seed from the altywart grass with my grandmothers.  They would teach us how to hang on to the tree and grind the seeds with our feet.  We would carry the seed in our coolamon back to the camp, then make damper cook it on the fire and eat with our families.

Dhawurr/batjbarra fish trap

Fish traps are placed into the river to face the oncoming fish. The woven tunnel traps the fish and prevents their escape. The traps are tapered so when they are submerged in the water, the water pressure wedges them into place. Traditionally, the fish traps are operated at night time.
