Tharnandi (deep ocean)

This is a a place where the Tamis tree is. From that spot you can go and look at the reef where it’s deep and we catch fish there off the rocks. The beauty of the colours can be seen underneath the water. You can look at them from far away but it changes as you go closer to look. The beauty of the ocean makes patterns underneath from the water moving, I am standing in awe of what’s down there, watching and looking closely. We locals love going fishing when the tides out, down at the reef, catching different variety of fish to share with families and one another. Living in the pilbara, we have the choice to go inland or out into the ocean to gather our food when we feel we need a change in our diets, we get our fish from the ocean and our kangaroo from the land.

Kunbowinjku (Fresh Water) 2022

Kunbowinjku (fresh water)

A new design made in 2022 featuring a mandjabu (fish trap), kunmadj (dilly bag) and fresh water.

‘This design is kunbowinjku – which is fresh water, kunronj. This is a mandjabu – fish trap which is floating in a creek. Fish will go in like yabby, long neck turtle and barramundi. This is a Kuninjku style of fish trap used for hunting. My father is from my Kuninjku side and he used this kind of trap. My mum is from my Kunibidji – Ndjebenna language side. This mandjabu is made from manylik grass.’

Birmba (White Cockatoo)

Birmba (White Cockatoo) is my family totem. It has been passed down from generation to generation. They always remind me of my grandfather, my sister and other family members who have passed on. White Cockatoos are like protective spirits for me and my family. They will give you signs. Good signs and signs of danger. They will let you know when to move on.
When I’m out with my grandchildren and there is a white cockatoo, I might say, “that is your grandmother, my sister who is watching us”.

At other times, the spirits of other family members visit us in form of white cockatoos. The White Cockatoo keeps our living and past family connected to each other and to our country. When I’m alone, I know they are around. I speak to their spirit and they give me strength.

Yulba (Saltwater Mussel)

The Yulba (Saltwater Mussel) is a favourite food in my family. We gather the shells from the mangroves and either cook them in the fire at the beach or take them home. I learned how to find them when I was a little girl and now I am teaching my own children.

Ngayuku Ngura – My Country

Artists use this title when they are depicting their Country. It might be a representation of a particular place or of different aspects of that area. The artist uses a combination of colour and design to indicate variations in the landscape. Inspiration is drawn from all elements of Country and might include bush tucker, water holes, meeting places, rock formation, birds or animals.
