Tali at Kalkuda Travel Mug (Blue)

This painting depicts the tali (sandhills) and kapi (rockholes) at Kalkuda. Kalkuda is located in the bush, west of Tjukurla and close to Lake Anec in Western Australia. This is the country of Maisie’s Grandmother, Tanara Napanangka. Maisie was passed down this story from her grandmother who taught her how to paint it. In this country, they make damper out of a crushed native seed called Wanganu.

Puli Puli Cotton Tea Towel

Keturah depicts the puli puli (rocks) at two different sites: the landscapes at Haasts Bluff and also Karrkurrutintja (Lake McDonald). Keturah depicts her childhood memories of both places.
“The sand hills I paint are my mother’s story and the rocks I paint are my own story. My paintings are about my story and my mother’s. When I look at my paintings I feel happy. My Grandmother used to say to me when I was younger: “One day you will paint.”

A3 Makarr (Fish Trap) 3

Fish traps are called Makarr in our language. They were made by men only. Our fathers and uncles used to make them with the lawyer vine. They stripped the stems and then soaked them in the river to keep them soft and bendy. They also had a special way of weaving the fish traps. They used them in the river to catch eels, jungle perch, fresh water catfish and turtle. To attract fish our old people used to sprinkle rain forest berries as bait over the trap.
