Ray Ray

A variety of rays are found around our island home, from the shallow waters of the shoreline to the reefs and deeper waters. This ray has been created by stitching reclaimed fishing net, rope and twine. Reclaimed fishing nets (also known as ghost nets) are derelict fishing nets that drift aimlessly at sea indiscriminately fishing, killing turtles, other creatures and tangling boat propellers. We are recycling these nets, incorporating other flotsam and making products for enjoyment and use. By purchasing this artwork you are helping indigenous communities who collect this net and other groups who make items to develop economic opportunities. We hope this product brings you great joy and helps spread the ghost net message.

Creek Bed

This artwork is the riverbank of Millstream. It’s a tropical oasis where we like to go swimming there, fishing and spending time with family.

Pilot Whale

In the Torres Strait, we are blessed to witness and encounter these nomadic mammals in our tropical waters. Drifting ghost nets ensnares all marine life. Unfortunately, whales are also victims to this invisible threat in the ocean. This artwork depicts a pilot whale and squids getting caught in drifting ghost nets.

Floating Bommie

When fishing nets are abandoned in the ocean, this creates an imbalance in the ecosystem. Drifting ghost nets ensnares many things in its wake. Barnacles, plastic waste and even jelly fish are victims of this floating problem. This piece shows the death trap for all marine life that get caught in this floating bommie

Hammerhead

The hammerhead shark in my language is called Kurrs. The hammerhead is significant to me because it is my totem, my childhood memories and upbringing on Iama is always associated with this animal. When ghost nets are entangled on the reef bed, this creates an invisible trap for all marine life, great and small. As depicted in this artwork, a hammerhead is caught in a ghost net trapped around a bommie on the sea floor.
