Wirniny (Pandanus)

Wirniny are an extremely useful plant for Indigenous people. The ripe red segments of the fruit can be roasted and eaten, and the white base of the leaves can also be eaten raw or cooked. The strong leaves of the wiriny are most notably used for clothing, hats, necklaces, mats, bags, baskets, ropes, twine, thatching and fishing. It also provides bush medicine: Chewing the leaves relieves sore throats, scabies, eye problems and pounded into a paste it can be used as an antiseptic ointment for wounds.

Make it Real Scrunchie Set by Cecelia Tigan

Broken coral

We have beautiful corals on my country when we were young, we would walk on the coral to collect trumpet shells. Small broken pieces would wash up on the shore, bleached white. But today the corals are being bleached by the rising water temperatures, so you see white coral in the reef under the water and there are broken pieces and white coral everywhere.

Aambarn and Jiidid (Manta ray and whirlpool)

Aambarn or Manta rays are not hunted by Mayala people, they swim freely and we let them be, we have respect for them, and they live alongside us. They can become very large and only breach the surface at certain times, it’s rare to see the large ones.

We have a big whirlpool on Mayala country It protects us from cyclones, sucking the cyclone down into the ocean before it makes landfall. If Mayala people want to cross over to visit other Country on the other side of Sunday Straight the only time you can cross is at king tides when the water is high and safe to cross.
