Levina Pitjara Morton – Atyenh Amper (My Country)

When I paint, I think of the stories my Grandmother Lilly tells me of how she and her family used to live. Where they lived on her country as she was growing up and how they followed their mothers and their grandmothers.

When I go hunting with family for bush tucker and bush medicine it makes me think of Lilly’s stories, the way they used to live off the land, traditionally.
I paint those places my Grandmother tells me about, I paint how I imagine they were and the life they used to lead.

Levina’s fine dot technique requires a lot of time and patience, communicates the pride and passion she has for her paintings and her country.

The community of Ampilatwatja made a conscious decision not to paint altyerr (dreaming stories). The artists paint their country where those stories sit.

Latoya Ngwarraye Petrick – Artna Alpeyt (Bush Flowers)

These bush flowers grow seasonally in Alyawarr country, some of which are also used in bush medicine remedies.

I have just started painting, my grandmother Elizabeth Ngwarraye Bonney has been teaching me, she tells me all about the bush flowers.

Yvonne Ngwarraye Bonney – My Hunting Country

Yvonne has painted her favourite hunting country after rain. “This is when the storm ants come and make the goannas nice and fat, the ground is soft for digging honey ants and it’s when the bush foods and grasses come up and grow strong. The country is normally bare with small stones and rocks everywhere, but after rain, everything comes alive.”

Yvonne is a tremendous hunter, she is skilled in reading tracks and reading the land. Painting hunting country is important and special to her.

Nancy Pitjara Frank – Inteng Inteng

Inteng inteng is bush medicine, it has a pretty purple flower, and sometimes white flowers – it changes colours. It is very smelly and you can smell it from a distance. We use it for bush medicine, we boil it up in water and sometimes in oil, to put on our skin to fix sores, and aches or to wash our bodies. My mother taught me and my sister Rita to make it. Her mother, my grandmother taught her how to make it. We made this medicine from a long time ago when we were little girls and we had no other medicine.

Kiara Pula Ladd – Apmer (Land)

I am new to painting. I am a singer and I love to perform, I have a music video. My mum Robina Pitjara Jones and my dad Kelvin Kemarre Ladd are both great painters, and my dad is a singer too. I really like their work but I have my own style. I want to paint landscapes and I want to paint the colours that I see in my land.
