Wildflowers – Joyrene Ngwarraye Holmes

When I go hunting for Echidna around the sandhills of Ampilatwatja I always spot the wild flowers and honey flowers.  We tap the Bankias against our hand and get the honey, it is sweet to taste.

After the rain and bushfires all the new flowers pop up around me. My favourite time of the year is winter when it is cooler to walk and hunt.

The community of Ampilatwatja made a conscious decision not to paint ‘altyerr’ dreaming stories. The artists paint their country where those stories sit.

Name: Joyrene Ngwarraye Holmes

Biography:

Joyreen Holmes Kngwarrey was born at Honeymoon Bore. She has two sisters, Alana and Sarina and a brother Stevie. "My father's country is Ampilatwatja. My mother's country is Antarrengeny. I paint because I enjoy it, sitting around talking. I like painting landscapes in the colours green, white, yellow, burnt amber and red. We go hunting when we are not painting or working. I like to go hunting for honey ant and bush potato. In the future I just want to keep looking after my kids."
