Wandjina and the Spirits

Wandjina was like a God to our people, they believed that he would fill up the river and the water holes and give them food, kangaroos, turtles and other animals. Gwion Gwion figures are found in rock art around Kalumburu. Some are hunters, and some are dancers, and some are the servants of the Wandjina.

Name: Matilda Oxtoby

Language: Wunambal

Community: Kalumburu

Biography:

Matilda was found in Dreaming by her first Mum, who fished for her, ate her and said, 'It tastes funny, this is a baby, but I am too old'. Matilda says, "She gave me to my Mum who became pregnant with me."

Matilda is an established artist, who has recently started painting at Kira Kiro Artists. Inspired by her sister Sylvia Djanghara, and well known artist and uncle Waigan Djanghara, Matilda considers local rock art themes and those of local flora and fauna that inhabit the river and pristine coastline of the Kalumburu surrounds.
