Biography:
Mavis is the eldest daughter of Janet Oobagooma. Mavis was the first artist
to re-establish Wandjina art practice at Mowanjum in 1997 under the tuition
of local artist Mark Norval. Mavis produces intricate compositions which
always retain an unusual symetrical style. She prefers to work on a black
background and introduces interesting textures in her renditions of local
grasses, such as spinifex and speargrass. Mavis has always shown an
inclination towards the arts and was active as a silk-screen artist at
Mowanjum during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
