The spear sticks

This painting is a memorial piece to remind us of Charlie and Norman Baird, who fought for their country.

The spears stand tall and strong, they represent who we are, our lore and our warrior status.

The coloured spears are a symbol of our tribal clans. The plain spears recognise warriors from different areas.

Biography:

My name is Florence Williams and I am an artist here at the Bana Yirriji Art Centre.

I was born in Cairns and grew up in Djabugay - Kuranda Country area.

When I was young I travelled back and forth from Kuranda and my mother’s country here at Kuku Yalanji. I am very proud to be a rainforest and saltwater bama.

I have learned a lot from my culture and I have learned to survive the  rainforest and saltwater country.

My artwork is a reflection from both my mother’s country and my father’s countries and the dreamtime stories from these areas.

The three piece represent the goanna dreaming, it's a reflection from my brother and my two cousin brothers. Through their performances they imitate goanna dancing paying homage to their sacred totem.

Through dancing overseas performing to different country showing Aboriginal Culture from Australian first nation people of this country.
