Kurranji, Shield

I have lived and worked on Buru, at Timbercamp Station, all my life. I am interested in traditional mark making, Using native tree species in my timber work and I am very inspired by the bush. I enjoy fishing, hunting and working the land. I also enjoy gathering bush tucker and practicing traditional ways. I make a lot of traditional tools for hunting and gathering but also make other wooden sculptures, such as Bulnlngja (Owl) which is my totem.

Name: Edward Madsen

Language: Kuku Yalanji

Biography:

I was born in Mossman on Eastern Yalanji country. When I was a young boy, we moved up to Buru (Chinacamp), to Dawnvale Station. I can remember working cattle and droving horses from a young age with my family. My mother is from Buru country and my father is a Dutch man. I attended high school in Ravenshoe but moved home to Buru once I had graduated.

My Grandmother was my first influence into learning traditional methods. She gave me the language name Bulnlngjawawa (meaning Owl spirit) which was passed on to me from my mother's father's side. As I was only little when my Grandfather passed away, she gave it to me from him. I am the last male child from my grandfather's land and family. I learnt the traditional ways to hunt, gather and learnt about culture and country from my Grandmother and the Traditional Owner's from Buru country.

As a adult, I have lived and worked on Buru, at Timbercamp Station, all my life.
