Karrmui schol swimming near the mangroves eating seagrasses. Be careful when picking up these fishes its very dangerous its fin always stings. This fish cannot be catch by hand line only when dragging net.

Biography:

I was born on Thursday Island but I grew up in Moa Island, Kubin Village. I live on Kubin with my mother and two siblings. As a child I've learnt certain things in life, in traditional work with art. When I first came into the art centre and had a look at all the work, it made me curious to the point I had to try it myself.

I like to talk about my culture and knowledge through my artwork, it’s important to keep my culture strong. Art gives me options to tell my story of how I see, feel and hear about my culture which is important to me. Without my culture I feel like I have no identity. 

I am inspired by my Aunty who is a senior artist at the art centre, who taught me more about art and shared her knowledge with me in drawing and lino cutting and printing. I’ve learned that making mistakes is no problem because they can all be fixed, and there’s also the happy mistakes that don’t need fixing.

I base my painting and drawings and prints on the environment and the surrounding location of my area which is the landscape of the sea and our cultural heritage. I notice particular changes in in our environment; land and sea, good and bad.

I have been working at the art centre for a few years now and have shown my work at the Cairns and Darwin art fairs and Tarnanthi as well.
