Jigal leaves and helicopter pods on peacock coloured silk by Mrs C Djiagween

Lengths of handprinted screen printed fabric on 100% silk dupion 137cm wide

The base fabric is peacock blue and is a three-colour print with tangerine, magenta and light grey coloured details.

The late Mrs C Djiagween was an esteemed Jabirr Jabirr and Yawuru Elder from the Dampier Peninsula and Broome region. Born in Beagle Bay in 1936 and she lived in Broome for many years.

Cissy had a wealth of cultural knowledge that she shared with her fellow artists and colleagues in her gentle way.

She was a founding member of Nagula Jarndu and attended art classes and workshops to develop her skills as an artist.  She was influenced by the abundance of Broome’s native flora.

Biography:

Mrs. Djiagween was an esteemed Jabirr Jabirr and Yawuru Elder from the Dampier Peninsula and Broome region. She was born in Beagle Bay in 1936 and lived in Broome for many years.

Mrs. Djiagween had a wealth of cultural knowledge that she shared with her fellow artists and colleagues in her very clam and gentle way.

She was a founding member of Nagula Jarndu and integral to the continuity of the art centre through her dedication to the recording and survival of cultural knowledge in a visual form.
