Make it Real Bag Charm by Dena Gower

Frilly 

When I first moved to the Kimberley, I stayed in a caravan park in Broome taking time for myself to heal and recover. Stepping outside I spotted the first frilled neck lizard I had ever seen on a log quite close to me. The Lizard looked at me and suddenly fanned out its frills- I felt like he was welcoming me to what would become my new home.

Make it Real is a project delivered through the Aboriginal Art Centre Hub of Western Australia (AACHWA). As a not-for-profit Aboriginal organisation, our profit story ensures the artist receives the economic benefits of their shared generational stories and culture. When an artist thrives, their community also benefits.

Biography:

Dena was born on Balladong and Whadjuk country and grew up on Wilman country in Narrogin where she spent time learning from her elders and visually recording this knowledge in her art, teaching herself how to paint with acrylics on canvas. Dena married into Yawuru family and moved to Rubibi, Broome, with her family in 2022. She joined Nagula Jarndu to continue her art practice and connect with like-minded women. She has quickly created a portfolio of carved ‘blocks’ to print from and is continuously producing new imagery to create her prints. Dena’s printing style is very loose and joyous and her work speaks to her happy disposition and the generous spirit she brings to the art centre each day. She tells stories about important aspects of her time growing up on Noongar Whadjuk. She is particularly drawn to the animals and plants from her country and the spiritual connections between all living forms.
