Biography:

Don is a respected senior artist in West Arnhem Land. He has painted alongside some of the areas most famous artists, including Bardayal 'Lofty' Nadjamerrek and Kalarriya 'Jimmy' Namarnyilk.

Don had his first solo exhibition in 2004 at RAFT Artspace in Darwin from which the National Gallery of Australia acquired two works. He was a finalist in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2014.

Don's work is direct and simple in contrast to the dynamic style of his peers. His paintings focus on essential shapes and arrangements of plants, animals and ritual objects that have relationships with the natural and spiritual world. His paintings identify the ancestors, animals. and plants found in his birthplace of Mankorlod. Objects seem to hover above the red ochre ground as if floating in the air or water. Don's family style of painting belongs to the same school as the Nadjamerrek family, the foundation of which resides within the rock art of the region.

As well as painting, Don is also known for his etchings and screen print designs.
