Kaiyar (Crayfish)

The ‘Kaiyar’ is very important to the fishing industry in the Torres Straits with demand and value being so high on the market. This means many islanders are employed as deep water crayfish divers as well as many being skilled recreational divers for crayfish. The ‘Kaiyar’ is found in all the Torres Strait reefs, and exported around the world today, but don’t say ewher the crayfish came from originally. The ‘Kaiyar’ is labelled “Australian Tropical Rock Lobster” for the market.
