Middens on Ngarluma Country
The Ngarluma people are saltwater people. Our ancestors would go to the beach and fish and look for shellfish. They would make a fire and cook their catch in the coals. Then they would pile the ash and the bones and the shells in a heap to keep the beach tidy. Our mums and dads took us fishing in the same places and we take our kids there today. And we leave our ash and bones in the same place as our ancestors. So you find big middens around Ngarluma country, but especially near the seaside.
