Wabul

This painting is about the wabul (Torres Strait pigeon).  It is a migratory bird that fly from the Torres Strait Island to the Australian mainland once a year to breed. The wabul are very good eating and I have lots of memories of my ngamu (mother) cooking up great feasts of wabul for my family when I was younger and into adulthood, passing down recipes and cultural food practices to the younger generations.
