Kananganyjar (Emu)

“It’s the Emu’s feeding in the morning, they call them kananganyjar (Emu). [This is] north of Jarpinkar, in the Great Sandy Desert. Jarpinkar – ngurra ngalmpa pulka jila-jamu Juwaliny-kura (Jarpinkar- home for Juwaliny people and clan groups). It’s a big waterhole in the Great Sandy Desert. There’s no trees and one big waterhole with lots of sand dunes (it’s Juwaliny People[‘s] country). [The] Death Adder or Rattlesnake…is the rainmaker and he lives here in the Great Sandy Desert.” – Alphonse Bullen The traditional country of Juwaliny people is in the north-west fringe of the Great Sandy Desert. Their neighbors were the Walmajarri to the north-west, Mangala to the East and Yulparija to the south. There are only a few people who can still speak Juwaliny. These people mainly live in Bidyadanga and Looma communities.
