Memories Through Bark #2

This work represents the textures, colours, shapes and leaves connected with the bark of our old gum trees. It makes me feel proud and connected to my Yorta Yorta country and think about many memories growing up in the bush and down the river with all my mob. This work was produced in collaboration with Melbourne-based Spacecraft Studio who have established an innovative working relationship with Kaiela Arts leading to significant project commissions with the NGV, MUMA, RMIT and SAM. This work was part of the 2021 Identity project. The project was a collaborative creative process utilising natural mineral pigments sourced by the artists on-country, and hand screen-printing and painting of artworks that had been developed through previous commissions.

Name: Cynthia Hardie

Language: Yorta Yorta

Biography:

Cynthia was born and raised in Mooroopna and over the years has filled her home with her beautiful creations. Reluctant to part with anything, she says her home is almost full to the rafters Her paintings adorn canvas, rocks, emueggs, timber, papier-mâché bowls, clap sticks, boomerangs, anything she can get her hands on and often more than one thing at a time. Her love of art and craft began as a child and has continued throughout her life. Mostly self-taught, she enjoys teaching her granddaughters how to paint, sharing her art supplies and painting small canvases and boomerangs.
