“This is a descendant of (people call it) Martu Romeo and Juliet, because in those days penalty was death when you married wrong skin. This is a love story. They was hiding. They lived in the dessert for long time and people all think that they’re still out there. In the drought season, they weren’t sure if they were still alive. He (Ilyala Stewart) is famous but not in the white fella way. And it is my job as an artist to lift people like him up. Make him well know because he’s part of Australia history. Martu people know him as the last nomad so it’s got to be in the Australian story.”

Biography:

I started painting and drawing when I was young. My mum and dad bought me water colour paints to practice with. In 2006 I started art classes at Jigalong TAFE. I learnt to paint on canvas and completed my first mural on the Jigalong TAFE building. I often paint stories learned from my grandparents, about country.  I like to do portraits that’s the thing I’m good at.  It’s the thing I like to do.  I like painting my self-portrait or painting friends and family if they give me permission.
