Damilipa (Blue Tongue Lizard), Biyay, Goanna, and Possum Story

This painting depicts Damilipa (Blue Tongue Lizard) scouring the vast landscapes of Gurrwiliny, NE Arnhem Land. Damilipa can be seen across Arnhem Land all year around. Damilipa is the dreaming for this artist’s family.

Yolngu hunt this Biyay for food and they can be very delicious to eat, like other meats you can find in Arnhem Land. These big lizards you can hardly find anymore because of the cane toads – the Biyay think the toads are frogs and then the gonna gets poisoned when they try to eat them. It’s sad that Biyay are becoming harder to find and Peter is painting them to continue the story and knowledge.
