Beswick Classic by Brett Bush

Senior artists at Djilpin Arts have been sharing culture for decades, ensuring knowledge is being passed on for future generations. As time passes, mobility, steady hand or vision issues increase, with the artist’s ability to document and transfer stories becoming somewhat reduced. Djilpin is supporting these artists to stay connected and maintain income by releasing their portfolio through this Classic Beswick Series.

Classic Beswick is a series of reproductions on paper. This is Classic Brett Bush.

Material: 308gsm heavy weight acid free cotton rag art paper

Size: 20cm x 20cm

Stories:
Billabong Tukka
This piece depicts traditional billabong bush tukka including two water goannas, multiple lily roots and two long neck turtles. Raark (fine line work) is completed using a traditional handmade jarlk brush. Two different raark styles are used; Yirritja and Dhuwa. Yirritja raark consists of multiple lines before alternating colour, and can be found on the lily roots. Dhuwa raark is single line, and can be found on all the animals.

Mimi Dancing
This piece depicts four Mimi spirits dancing. Also included are some bush tools such as two spears, a mako or didjeridu, clap sticks and a dilly bag.

Dilly Bags
This piece is a step away from Brett’s usual stories of billabong fish and tasty tucker. It depicts traditional bush tools. You can see two dilly bags on the right, and a traditional fish trap on the left. Brett has used both the Yirritja (multiple lines of each colour) and Dhuwa (single line) rarrk throughout this piece. The fish trap has a combination of both types of rarrk.

Long Neck Turtle
In this image you can see a long neck turtle, a file snake, and a barramundi. All are good tukka. This painting features predominantly Yirritja rarrk (multiple lines of each colour), which can be found on the turtle and barramundi. Dhuwa rarrk (single line) is seen on the tail tip of the file snake. Stippling effect can also be found on the remainder of the file snake body.
