Name: Leanne Lippo

Language: Anindilyakwa

Community: Umbakumba

Biography:

“I grew up in Belyuen and went to Groote when I was 17/18

with Josh’s mum and I stayed there in Umbakumba for

about thirty years. I started to learn their culture; I know how

to paint. I like creating things, making shells, earrings,

baskets. My step mum Lorraine (Dinjamala, Mamarika)

taught me how to make baskets with feathers, she taught

me how to find the tree or plant to make basket or a tree to

make carving. She also taught me how to find colours,

(because different to mainland, much harder). In all the

years I was there I learnt to speak their language.”
