Eternal Flame

This painting is inspired by the 2024 NAIDOC theme “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak Loud & Proud”. Traditionally, fire is used as a tool to care for Country. It maintains balance, its smoke cleanses and the charred earth promotes healthy, new growth. From hurt comes hope. As the name says, of represent the figurative “eternal flame” of Australia. Meaning that the flame, the strength of this country and its history and the pride we have for it, should never be extinguished.

Biography:

Gifted the name Muguy, meaning constant in her traditional language, Mya is always seeking to further her cultural knowledge.

 

Mya was born and raised in Greater Shepparton and holds a deep respect for the Country of the Yorta Yorta and Bangerang peoples as it carries many of her childhood memories.

 

As a Dulguburra Yidinji woman, she has a strong connection to her mother’s Country, the rainforest in and around the crater lakes of the tablelands, inland of Gimuy (Cairns).

A contemporary artist across various mediums, Mya enjoys experimenting with textures and colours in reflecting her experiences and the stories her mother tells her of ‘home.’
