Buri

This painting represents the earthly element of fire or “Buri” the word for fire in Yidiny language. This piece sends the message that despite facing danger or troubles in our lives we can continue to stay strong and learn from our past mistakes. In this piece I have used line work on the corners of the canvas to represent fire and troubles we may face. Additionally, I have illustrated a branch representing individuals and their strength to stay clear of the flame and troubles that may harm them.

Name: Mya Falla

Biography:

Gifted the name Muguy, meaning constant in her traditional language, Mya is always seeking to further her cultural knowledge.

Mya was born and raised in Greater Shepparton and holds a deep respect for the Country of the Yorta Yorta and Bangerang peoples as it carries many of her childhood memories.

As a Dulguburra Yidinji woman, she has a strong connection to her mother’s Country, the rainforest in and around the crater lakes of the tablelands, inland of Gimuy (Cairns).

A contemporary artist across various mediums, Mya enjoys experimenting with textures and colours in reflecting her experiences and the stories her mother tells her of ‘home.’
