Handwoven Dillybag earrings in Copper (silver hook)

Wagilak Yapa Watj (Wagilak Sisters) range –
exclusive jewellery from indigenous women of Beswick. Developed in studio workshops with jeweller Kate Sale and weaver Fiona Gavino, traditional fibre artists are translating their skills into a series of fine woven wire earrings and pendants. Hand woven in sliver, gold and copper, traditional forms are transformed as delicate interpretations of string and dilly bags, baskets and mats.

Featuring sterling silver, 9ct gold and copper (all nickel-free work).

Name: Marsianne Cameron

Language: Yolngu, Kriol

Community: Wugularr (Beswick)

Biography:

As a young girl growing up at Beswick, Marsianne was expected to help her mother (master weaver Noreen Ashley) harvest, strip and dye Pandanus and other fibre for traditional weaving.

At the age of 23, Marsianne came to the Culture Centre and joined the womens' Woven Wire project. Deftly applying her years-long observation of weaving technique, she produced a range of finely crafted earrings in silver and copper, based on the ancient form of the woven Dilly Bag. Marsianne's work was launched at Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair 2024.
