Goannas

Gapu is a series of limited edition fine prints created in a long standing a collaboration between Basil Hall Editions and Beswick artists. Gapu Series XI uses, for  the first time, the Collograph technique and features 23 prints by 14 senior and emerging artists from Beswick.  Gapu (Water) features life and cultural practice around the water ways of both Beswick and the ancestral homelands of the artists, from hairy yams to woven string bags, sitting ducks on the billabong to fish hiding in the lily roots, ceremonial dilly bags to the mythical Mimis that share country.

Editions are limited to 30 prints, printed on Hahnemuhle paper.

Biography:

Major Cameron has been working with Djilpin Arts since it was established in Beswick community. Major belongs to a long line of accomplished dancers and cultural custodians. His father was a brilliant dancer and he passed on his knowledge of dance & song, as well as art to his eldest son, Major. Major was born in Katherine and attended school there before moving to Beswick as a young man. Major is a gifted dancer and has performed numerous times for cultural purposes and for the general public. He is also a wonderful singer and musician as well as one of Djilpin Arts' most accomplished artists of his generation. Major has also studied film-making through Djilpin Arts' media unit and has appeared in advertisements for Djilpin Arts' clients. Aside from painting, Major is also a print-maker having worked with Basil Hall editions in Darwin & Beswick to produce his distinctive etchings. His recent prints from the Billabong Series IV collection have been exhibited at Art Melbourne and the Darwin Art Fair.
