Name: Jane Mervin

Language: Pitjantjatjara

Community: Amata

Biography:

Jane came from Amata Community, SA, to Alice Springs in the early 2000s and for three years she studied at Batchelor College, receiving a Certificate 2 in Arts and Craft. Since 2011 Jane has painted with the Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists.

She paints predominantly tjulpu (birds), executed with a playful use of texture, colour and story. Jane’s joyful affinity with the tjulpu speaks of her connection to community and country.

Referring to her favourite subject, owls; "At night time the owls come in to visit. I can hear them, I look for them. I see the owl and the moon and then I go to sleep."

She draws inspiration from her memories of life in Amata and images from the books she keeps on her desk to create texture rich canvases and elaborate works on paper. Janes’ gentle soul and quirky brand of humour are evident in all she does.

Passionate about teaching her language, Pitjantjatjara, to her Support Workers and fellow artists, Jane is key in cultivating the exchange of knowledge and stories that transpires within the studio on a daily basis.
