Winupar Springs & Rosie’s Yard by EVELYN MALGIL
‘This is my family place. Hot water spring and cold water spring. That big hill on the background is my family place. That water live all year ’round. That little sand frog, it live for a long time.’ This place is the Ngarrangkarni (Dreaming) site for the sand frog. The waterhole at Winuba holds water all through the Dry season.
This is a place called Rosie’s Yard near Alice Downs Station “this is my mother and grandmother’s *country” Evelyn says that when she was a young woman, her and her family members would walk from Alice Downs to Rosie’s Yard to visit.
Evelyn has painted the scenery of her country – where in the front the artist has included a flat clearing with anthills, sitting upright. In the back are the rugged earthy hills of her country (Alice Downs) and trees in the mid-ground.
The brown forms in the middle and next to the orange range is a cave near Rosie’s Yard, on Evelyn’s mother’s country. There is water inside this cave. Just as Evelyn went there with her mother, she also visits the area with her son and his wife.
