Kulyakartu

Kulyakartu is a large area in the far north of the Martu homelands, near the Percival Lakes region of Western Australia’s Great Sandy Desert. Kulyakartu is mostly flat grass Country, and is known as a good hunting area. In particular, parnajarrpa (goanna), wild cats, and lunki (witchetty grub) are found in abundance here. In the wantajarra (wet season) the dry lakes in the region fill with water.

Name: Chloe Jadai

Biography:

"I started painting because of the feeling of it- I knew I wanted to paint. I grew up watching my grandparents paint. I like to paint more about the ocean. In Bidgy [Bidyadanga] we are surrounded by ocean.

When I paint [Kulyakartu, the desert], I chose blues and greens because that’s how I want to express how I see the landscape."

- Chloe Jadai

Chloe Jadai was born in Derby and grew up in Bidyadanga, a coastal community where the desert meets the sea in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. In more recent times she has lived between Bidyadanga and Parnngurr, where she works with the Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa Rangers.

Through her family, Chloe was immersed in art from a young age. Her artworks often explore the connection between two vastly different worlds—Bidyadanga’s coastline and the desert landscapes of Kulyakartu and Kirriwirri. She uses a distinctive palette of blues and greens to reflect her emotional and visual experience of Country. Chloe’s work was exhibited in Revealed: New and Emerging WA Aboriginal Artists in 2025 and featured in Vogue Australia the same year.
